      Romans 6:3
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Romans 6:1-7 is what really needs to be read. Baptism is part of God's salvation and not just a ritual. If baptism were not necessary then Jesus would not have been baptized nor would He have commanded that we be baptized. Jesus wasn't a time waster. Everything He did and said was crucial to one entering into heaven. Paul explains in Romans 6 that baptism is our death to sin just as Christ died to sin (though He committed no sin yet took on sin for our sake). Just as Christ did not stay in the grave, neither are we to stay in that watery grave of sin. He rose to newness of life and so are we to do the same.
