      Esther 4:16
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

Here, fasting ws done for three days. You would fast until God answered one way or another. You're going to get tired and your human nature will tell you that God has already answered. God's answers are never confusing. Also, make sure it is both food and water. God wants all. Anything less is not a total sacrifice. Fasting is meant to be uncomfortable.
