"I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
In the context of this verse, Jesus paints a picture of two men in prayer. The one exalts himself by saying that he is happy to not be like those around him who are lowlier than him. The other simply throws himself on the mercy of God. God wants us to be like the latter, humble before Him and dependent on Him. If we are, God will be the one to accept and recognize us.
