Some people believe that deacons' "wives" in [1 Timothy 3:11] actually refers to deaconesses. Also, Phoebe was a deaconess in the church of Cenchrea [Romans 16:1-2] Priscilla was one of Paul's helpers [Romans 16:3]. And if you want to go way back, Deborah was a prophetess and judge over Israel in the Old Testament [Judges 4:4-14]. The Bible also lists many other prophetesses: Miriam [Exodus 15:20,21], Huldah [2 Kings 22:12-20], Isaiah's wife [Isaiah 8:1-3], Anna [Luke 2:36], etc. |
