   Book Review:
        The Names of God
by Lester Sumrall
What's in a name? A rose by .. I would like to differ from the great poet. Names do mean something and are very important. If I knew the great poet personally in his time, I would've called him Will or Bill but if I didn't, I would've adressed him as Mr. Shakespeare. There are very valid and important reasons behind the changing of people's name by The Lord Himself, Abram, Sarai, Jacobm etc.

In this book, the author gave an inspired account of God's revelation of His name to the partriachs. Abraham knew God as Jehovah-Elyon before he knew God as El-Shaddai. This book also explains the meanings of God's names. Ever wonder why the Jewish scribes wrote the name of God as YHWH without any vowels?

Do not be misled by the title of the book. It offers more than just the names of God. It touches a wider aspect of Christian teachings. It also teaches us how to pray and worship, claim victory and deliverance over our enemies. "Worship is a discipline, it does not come naturally for carnal human beings"- pg 43.

This book succeed as a good Christian book ought to. It brings revelation, charges up the faith to a higher level and refreshes. It is not doctrinally offensive to this reviewer. Honestly, for my case, only after the second reading does the important points start to sink in.
"Each name is a like a golden key, ready to unlock a treasure of truth to the inquiring mind"- pg 22.

This is a good book. Why is it such a good book? I've only realised how good the book is after I've put it down. Because now, I know the names of God. How God appeared to His people and told them His names in different situations.

God is reminding us who He is in His name. His name is Jehovah Shalom (the Lord is my peace), His name is Jehovah Repheka (the Lord is my healer). Wow, imagine if we know all the names of God, we know how to call on His Name specifically in different situations. And that is what I have been doing after reading the book. I started calling on God by His different Names. When I felt I needed help to conquer a situation, I called on His Name, Jehovah Nissi (which means The Lord is my banner). This was the same name that Moses used when the Israelites won the war against the Amalekites.

[Exodus 17:15,16]
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Feel like you're fighting against the enemy, satan? Call upon the name of the Lord of Hosts, Jehovah-Tsebaoth. That was the name that David used when He said to Goliath:

[1 Samuel 17:45]
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

Now that we know the names of God, imagine how powerful it is to call upon God by each of His name and remind Him and to remind ourselves and to remind the situation of His Name.

The following is a short description of eleven of God's names. If you really want to read more and find out more about what the names mean, get the book. Lester Sumrall tells expounds on each name in a different chapter:

YHWH - I am who I am [Ex 3:14]
Jehovah-Elohim - The Lord is God [Gen 1:26]
Jehovah-Elyon - The Lord God most high [Gen 14:19,20]
El-Shaddai - The almighty God [Gen 17:1-1]
Jehovah-Jireh - The Lord will provide [Gen 22:6-8]
Jehovah-Repheka - The Lord is Healer [Ex 15:25-26]
Jehovah-Tsidqenu - The Lord is our Righteousness [Jeremiah 23:6]
Jehovah-Tsebaoth - The Lord of Hosts [Isaiah 31:5]
Jehovah-Nissi - The Lord is conqueror or the Lord is my banner [Ex 17:15,16]
Jehovah-Shalom - The Lord is Peace [Judges 6:24]
Jehovah-Shamah - The Lord is there [Ezek 48:35
