The Bible clearly states that if we "confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins." [1 John 1:9]
Conviction in our hearts, most often - causes us to not commit a particular sin again, however, it is good to remember, "For He made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." [2 Cor. 5:21]
Why do we willing do things that we know are wrong, in the sight of God? -- Because we want to satisfy our flesh. There's always a battle between the Spirit and the flesh, -- and it's not an easy battle [Gal. 5:16-17].
I too had an adulterous affair at the age 21. So,I understand your pain. We must always learn and heal from our mistakes.
For the sake of you not beating yourself up -- day after day -- remember this scripture: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace." [Eph. 1:7]
Peace and Blessings to you.
May you abide in His Love.
