Prayer Email archive: (09/13/2000) what is success? |
Hello prayer warriors,
1. Prayer note: what is success? [Joshua 1:8] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. How do we define success? Many times we look for success in the world when success can be found in the Word of God. My pastor covered this topic recently and I thought I'd share it. First principle he shared is: It is not what I have -- what I give [Acts 20:35b] It is more blessed to give than to receive. Many times, our lives' goal is to get this and to get that. If we are only happy when we have gotten this or gotten that, then our happiness will be very short-lived. How many of us achieve our lives' goal everyday? Are we only going to be happy for only those few moments when we achieved what we want and unhappy for the rest? My pastor talked about Andrew Carnegie. When he was in his 20s, he wrote on a slip of paper that he wants to spend the first half of his life earning money and the next half of his life giving it away. In his lifetime, he has given away 450 million dollars. Andrew Carnegie had some contemporaries who met at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. They were considered then as a group of the world’s most successful financiers. In the end, three of them committed suicide, one of them died a bankrupt, another died penniless and two more spent time in prison. God has blessed us to be a blessing. Our lives' goal is not to obtain and hoard possessions on this earth, but to build out treasures in heaven. And the only thing we can take to heaven is our character and lives of other people that we have impacted. People do not remember you for what you have, but for what you have given them. Success is not what we have but what we give. 2. New prayer requests: i. Family needing prayer! -- eagleent Pray for strength for my family as we try to live for God. My wife suffers from an anxiety disorder, depression & I suffer from lack of financial wisdom among other things. God is the answer to all our spiritual, physical & financial problems, but prayer is desperately needed. Severe depression is dangerous and I need to be a supportive Godly man & physically provide for my hurting family. I also ask you to pray God gives me spiritual leadership. http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=5&forumtype=2&topicid=351&table=prayer ii. Kidney transplant needed -- christiandeb Please pray for my friend Jason. He is a loving Christian brother whose been going through a very tough time. His wife left him & now both of his kidneys have failed. He is currently on dialysis & unless God miraculously intervenes will need a transplant as soon as possible. There is a big waiting list where I live. Jason is also having an operation to unkink a dialysis tube to-day. http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=5&forumtype=2&topicid=353&table=prayer iii. My church & town -- christiandeb I live in an area in which there is much unemployment, poverty, heartache, crime. We have a church there & it is growing steadily but we desire to see the fire of God sweep through our land. We desire to see employment instead of unemployment, prosperity instead of poverty, joy for heartache & law instead of crime. We know there is no quick fix for things that have happened over a long time, but with God all things are possible & my desire is to see my land healed & many won to Jesus. http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=5&forumtype=2&topicid=354&table=prayer iv. Pray for me -- ilovecats (waihun: this is an excerpt) I have been married to a Mexican man for 8 years who speaks spanish & english. I don't speak enough spanish. I've tried teaching myself on & off for the past 10 years, but I get bored, frustrated or too busy to study. We attend a spanish speaking church that tries to go bilingual, but they don't provide any english bible studies & basically I am the only one that they speak english for during the sermon. The worship is 98% spanish. They are investing in a $1000 interpreting headsets system but I still need to learn spanish so I can fellowship. My 1st request is that I receive a deep desire to study spanish. also for time & resources (money) & memory to absorb the language quickly. My 2nd request is for more energy, I'm 6½ months pregnant & have 2 other children plus a full time job. I feel zapped of energy & need prayer for God's supernatural strength. My 3rd request is for my husband to find a night job that he will enjoy, the hours will fit our schedules & that will supplement my income (he is watching the kids during the day). My 4th request is that I seem to have distanced myself from God & am having a hard time getting myself to pray even 15 minutes or so a day. http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=5&forumtype=2&topicid=356&table=prayer 3.
