        (02/26/2001) be still

Hello prayer warriors,

1. Prayer note: be still

[Psalm 4:4]
In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent

I talked in the last prayer email about giving up.
Many times we want to give up because we are not sure
whether we are walking in the perfect will of God. And
many times the reason why we are not sure is because
we feel that we cannot hear from God.

The real reason why we are not sure is because we have
not learned to really withdraw and be silent before
God. We have not learned to spend enough time with Him
and to seek His face in everything.

Moses heard from God when he withdrew to the mountain
of God (mount Horeb). Jesus learned to withdraw in the
midst of pressure to be alone with God [John 6:15]. I
believe that David learned to hear from God because he
frequently withdrew to be alone with God when he was
tending sheep.

We need to get alone, and be still. Not to be
presumptuous and think that God will lead us through
circumstances, through visions or even audible voices.

[1 King 19:11-12]
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount
before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and
a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake
in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was
not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but
the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 & after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not
in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

There was a time when Elijah was running away because
of Jezebel's threats and he was expecting to hear from
God through spectacular circumstances ... through the
wind, through an earthquake, through fire. God instead
chose to speak to him through a still small voice.
What is this still small voice?

I heard a very good explanation from Bill Wilson. He
said that the Hebrew translation for a still small
voice is a silent voice. You are probably already
familiar with this silent voice with a spouse or a
close friend. You know what your spouse wants to say
through a small gesture or a facial expression because
you are familiar and close to the person. You have
spent enough time with someone to understand them
through their expressions and through their unspoken
words or what we would call through the silent voice.

Similarly, if we learn to withdraw and spend time with
God, He will guide us. We will KNOW the answer. It is
the silent voice of Someone we know intimately because
we have spent enough time with Him. We don't need to
live in uncertainty because He can lead us. And God
wants us to seek Him in everything.

[Philippians 4:6-7]
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in EVERYTHING,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds
in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

It is the peace of God, or the inner witness or this
"knowing" that God will give us when we seek Him. Or
you can call it the still small voice.

So, learn to get alone, withdraw and bring everything
before God. Be still. Remove every emotional unrest
and anxiety and cast everything to God. Prayer is
never meant to be one-way. It is not just us speaking
and telling God everything. After we have spoken our
minds, we need to stop talking, learn to be silent and
give God an opportunity to talk. Our responsibility
then is to LISTEN.

[John 10:27]
My sheep HEAR my voice, and I know them, and they
follow me.
