Prayer Email archive: (12/22/2000) receiving the gift of tongues |
Hello prayer warriors,
1. Prayer note: receiving the gift of tongues One of the first evidence of baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. [Acts 2:4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [Acts 19:6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. The Jews only believed that the gentiles can receive the Holy Spirit when the first gentiles, the household of Cornelius, spoke in tongues. [Acts 10:45-46] And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Is there a place for tongues today? [1 Corinthians 14:4] He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. When we speak in tongues, we edify ourselves. Again, we receive by simply asking God and receiving by faith. What does it mean to receive by faith? First of all, we know that we are speaking in an unknown language. It is a heavenly language. Because, the language is unknown to us, to receive by faith means that we do not use our mind to receive the gift. That is many times our stumbling block. I did not receive tongues until a few months after I was baptised with the Holy Spirit. I've tried many times to ask God but failed each time. I was using my mind, my logic-box, instead of my heart, my faith-box. We cannot receive supernatural gifts from God with our mind. My breakthrough came when I did my devotion one morning and I got the following verse: [Proverbs 3:5,6] Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. I asked God, what does this mean? That afternoon, there was a mini-revival in my school. We had a morning service and a number of people accepted Christ. We went to a room to pray for the people who accepted. When I entered the room, the presence of the Holy Spirit was so strong that I started weeping. Everyone was weeping. And then, I saw many of my friends who came from conservative, non-charismatic churches filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. I was astonished and then [Proverbs 3:5,6] came back to me. I have been using my mind to understand tongues, to think of how the words will be articulated and expecting God to perform a miracle or make me speak in tongues. When I understood what God was trying to tell me, I asked someone to pray for me that I might receive tongues. I finally let go to trust in God and let Him lead the way. True enough, God filled my mouth with utterance of a heavenly language. When Peter wanted to walk on water, Jesus said, "Come". [Matthew 14:28-29] 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. How did Peter walk on water? By faith. He had to step out of his boat, out of things that he knew, into the unknown and trust God. God did not force him out of the boat or perform a miracle to cause Peter to fly out of the boat. The same it is with tongues. We need to open our mouth and say whatever it is that is bubbling in our heart, whether it makes sense or not. God will continue when we take that step of faith and give us utterance. I started with "Baa, baa, baa" and now, I actually speak with a "fuller" language. So, if you can take that step of faith, ask God for this gift that you may use this gift for edification and to pray in the perfect prayer for yourself and for others. If you have not received Christ yet, please read the previous email before you proceed. You need to be a believer first before you can receive the baptism: http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=11&forumtype=3&topicid=1572&table=prayer "Father in heaven, I believe that Jesus died on the Cross for my sins and on the third day He rose again. Jesus, I ask that You come into my life and become the Saviour and Lord of my life. I renounce all other gods in my life. I also ask that You fill me now with Your Holy Spirit to overflowing and baptize me. I know that when I ask You for the Holy Spirit, Your Word says that I will receive the Holy Spirit. I receive the Holy Spirit now by faith. Thank You Jesus. I also ask that You give me the gift of tongues that I may learn to pray to You in this heavenly language. As I open my mouth and speak by faith, please give me utterance. Thank You Lord. In Jesus' Name, Amen" Now, just let go, trust and step out in faith. 2. New prayer requests: i.
