Prayer Email archive: (12/02/2000) edifying the spirit part 2 |
Hello prayer warriors,
1. Prayer note: edifying the spirit part 2 We covered the Word of God and how important the Word is to our spirit man. Now, I will talk about another area where we can edify our spirit man. This is a difficult area for me because even though I am charismatic, I have shied away from charismatic topics because I respect everyone here. However, just like when I struggled with talking about giving and tithing, I have recently been struggling with God on this topic. This is because one of the ways to build our spirit man is through praying in the spirit. I know not all of us pray in the spirit (pray in tongues) but if you allow me, I will cover the gifts of the Holy Spirit as my next theme in this prayer email. Let us be open, not to me, but to the Word of God and see what His Word says about this. Study the Word and find out what His Word says for yourself. Don't just take my word for it. I have killed many sacred cows before in my mind whenever I come to the Word. I am continually learning and continually renewing my mind because His Word transforms me. [2 Timothy 1:5] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. [1 Cor 14:4] He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. The bible does cover speaking in tongues and say that when we pray in the spirit, we edify our spirit man. Paul himself says that he speaks in tongue more than any of the Corinthians. [1 Cor 14:18] I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: What is speaking in tongues? This is a heavenly language which God gives us to communicate with Him. It is not a language that men understand. It is also one of the first signs of being filled in the Holy Spirit [Acts 10:46] [Acts 19:6]. [Romans 8:26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. The Holy Spirit can make intercession for us when we pray in the spirit. Praying in the spirit is very powerful. If you read book of Corinthians in context, Paul is not forbidding people to speak in tongues. [1 Cor 14:2] For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. There are two types of tongues. One tongue which we use when we pray in the spirit and pray to God. Another, which we use when God choose to use the gift of tongues to speak to men which then would require an interpretation as no one would understand us. In the book of Corinthians when Paul was talking about not speaking in tongues unless there is an interpretation, he was talking in the context of speaking in tongues in the church when we are ministering to other people because no one would understand us unless we interpret. He is not forbidding us to speak in tongues altogether, otherwise he himself would not say that he speaks in tongues more than the others. If you are already praying in the spirit, try this, the next time you spend quiet time alone with God and pray, pray with understanding and then ask God for the perfect prayer and pray in the spirit for the prayer request until you feel a release in the spirit realm. You will find that you become more sensitive in your spirit when you pray in tongues. This revelation and this practice has transformed my prayer life and changed me. If you do not believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, please do not be offended and give us time to study the scriptures together and let us ask God together to give us more revelation into His Word and in this area. 2. New prayer requests: i. guidance to do the will of God -- jennifer I found out that I am pregnant. This to me is a great joy. But, my fiance of 4 years & I are not married. Our plans were to get married after the baby is born because at this moment I am going to school & will start my nursing studies. The only reason to get married in Dec is because I don't want people to talk. I feel that even though these people might talk, I should not listen to them. But, to go along with what God wants. Any advice is needed. http://mydevotion.com/logos/asp/viewpyrrep.asp?forumid=5&forumtype=2&topicid=1528&table=prayer ii. parents -- beachman83 My family (grandma, father & mom) are a part of a church that does not accept Christ as their Lord & Savior.
