(11/22/2000) difference between soul and spirit

Hello prayer warriors,

1. Prayer note: difference between spirit and soul

[Hebrews 4:12]
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and
sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the
dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints
and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and
intents of the heart.

Here, you find that the scripture gives us an analogy
between the soul and the spirit, like the joints
(soul) and marrow (spirit), and the thoughts (soul)
and heart (spirit).

Our soul is here positioned like our thought life and
sometimes I think apply to some of our emotions too.
Our spirit is like our heart, which if you really
think about it is this person deep inside of you. Out
of our heart also springs many real desires and
sometimes malice too.

[Matthew 15:18]
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come
forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders,
adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness,
blasphemies:

[Proverbs 4:23]
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are
the issues of life.

Real joy and sorrow can be felt by the heart but
happiness and sadness sometimes are just part of our
soul. That is why people say that we have the joy of
the Lord and not the happiness because it is something
that happens within our spirit that is not based on
external circumstances, but something deep within our
being.

[Isaiah 65:14]
Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but
ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for
vexation of spirit.

Many scriptures further associate the spirit with our
heart. I don't believe that this "heart" is the same
way that the world describes our heart now.

[Psalm 51:17]
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken
and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

[Psalm 143:4]
Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart
within me is desolate.

God's Spirit communes with our spirit which I believe
is our "heart".

[Galatians 4:6]
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the
Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba,
Father.

[1 Peter 3:4]
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that
which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek
and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of
great price.

This heart is our inner man, our inner most being. It
is different from our thoughts and our higher level
emotions. Even though the inner man reacts to our
thoughts and emotions (which I covered in the previous
prayer emails)
, it is capable of spiritual
communication with God and this is when we have the
inner witness or that peace that transcends all
understanding (our thought or soul life). It is this
spirit within us that calls out to God and is
activated when we first believe. That is why you can
really tell whether someone has been born again and
come to the knowledge of Christ. Something changes
inside of them that causes their whole attitude,
desires, goals and understanding to change. But this
only happens when we feed our inner man with the Word
of God.

[1 Peter 2:2]
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,
that ye may grow thereby:

There is so much to learn from the Word of God and to
discover. He reveals so many truths which is not
known to the world and sometimes cannot be
comprehended because they can only be comprehended and
fully understood and consumed by our spirit man.
