   Verse Questions:
        Genesis 1:26

Does this verse mean an exact likeness or does "image" mean how God imagined us to look? Surely this isn't literal pertaining to the physical sense?

God did not make us like Himself physically, for He is pure spirit; we are a combination of body, soul and spirit. He made us a moral reflection of Himself. There are several similarities we have with Him. We are creative, emotional, moral agents, just as He is.

it means spirit. God is a spirit we have a spirit. our body is the "house"for the spirit until the body withers away(dies) our spirit goes to heaven or hell but never dies. that is how we are in his image.

No. Man is created with two hands, two legs, one head, and a body like God's. Not exact, of course, but generally similar.
After all, Jesus is God, and He had the same body as men always do. Compare if you like, but the answer's the same; more or less, yes.

Hello gw,

This is my understanding. God is a spirit and when we worship Him, we have to worship Him in spirit and truth.

[John 4:23-24]
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

In the image of God and in His likeness. John 4:24 says that God is a Spirit and when we look into the account of Genesis that when God created man, He breathed into man the breath of life [Genesis 2:7]. We are the only creation who received this breath of life and I believe this is the spiritual life that God has breathed into us. That is why we are made of body, soul and spirit.

[Romans 8:15-16]
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

It is our spirit that is in tune with God, that seeks the living God and it is by Jesus' death that He pours out His Spirit to us. It is like the first act of God breathing life into Adam, Jesus breathes life into us by releasing His Holy Spirit into our lives. The difference is that the first spiritual life that we have is natural and already cut off from communion with God during the fall. Now God has breathed into our spirit the Holy Spirit who is given by Jesus who is divine.

[1 Cor 15:45-49]
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.
48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

I also believe that God has a soul, ... emotions and in that way, we are also made after Him having a soul.

This is my understanding and I know it is not easy. I am still grapling with this issue. I welcome other views.

"in our image" refering to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He wanted to make us like them spiritually and physially, don't you think?
