I have found that you can't take everyting in a literal sense. This is the begining so God is laying down the frame work if you will. He is telling them or maybe preparing them for what is to come later by laying this frame work early. I do find it though to be a very confusing read. Like others have posted there have to be some missing links here. I am sure that if the Bible was written word for word, day for day, on everything and every detail that happened in that era it would not be readable......it would take hundreds of years to digest that much information.

In my opinion, God did not intend for Adam and Eve to be the only 2 people to live here on earth. Obviously, there would be children, hence mother and father...Just my opinion, tho.

The Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) were most likely written by Moses. It's very probable that Moses added that line in to explain things to his people and readers.

You are right, at this time there is no father or mother. But I believe that Adam already knows that he is able to reproduce and already understand the concept of father and mother. The Bible sometimes does not tell us everything that God has told Adam or everything that Adam knows. Again, this is my opinion.

I also believe that when God created Adam, He created Adam as an intellectual partner. He asked Adam to name all the cattle, all the fowl of the air, etc. You can imagine how many creatures there are and to be able to think of a name for each one, Adam must have been a very intelligent being.

Because we are made in God's image and because God is a creator, we are creators and are creative. Because God is intelligent, we are intelligent. However, we may have degenerated through time because we have been removed from our Source because of the fall of man. That may be the reason why the first few generations of men lived many more years than we are living now.
